President James Garfield On September 20, 1881, our 21st President was sworn into office. Chester Arthur took the oath of office on that day, after the death of President James Garfield. President James Garfield was assassinated on July 2, 1881, less than four months after his inauguration. President Garfield survived for eighty days, eventually dying on September 19th, 1881.
Fun Facts about President Chester ArthurPresident Arthur was the son of a Baptist preacher who had emigrated from Ireland. He served as Quartermaster General of the State of New York in the early years of the Civil War During his presidency, he often mingled with the "elite" of Washington, New York and Newport Arthur's administration enacted the first general Federal immigration law, excluding paupers, criminals, and lunatics. Nicknames: "Elegant Arthur" (for his love of fancy clothes) and "The Gentleman Boss" Chester Alan Arthur was born on October 5, 1829 in Fairfield, Vermont President Arthur suffered from Bright’s disease, an incurable kidney ailment, which he eventually died from in 1886.
