I recently had the opportunity to read Carolina Rain, Nancy B. Brewer's Civil War historical fiction novel. I have to say... I really, really enjoyed this book! Set in South Carolina, before and during the Civil War, this book tells the story of Theodosia Elizabeth (Lizzie) Sanders. Lizzie was born in 1842, and came of age just before the Civil War started. It is one of the best historical fiction novels that I've ever had the pleasure of reading.
I haven't enjoyed a book so much in a long time. As owner of American History Fun Facts, I often get a chance to review books related to American history. And I love doing that. But I haven't yet had many chances to write an historical fiction book review. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to read and review this one!
With Carolina Rain, the author paints a beautiful picture of a Southern family coping with the changes that took place leading up to and during the Civil War. This Civil War era novel captures life in the South during that time perfectly!
The historically accurate portrait that the author gives with her words will grab you from the first few pages and keep you interested all the way through the book. I could hardly put it down! Intrigue, love, tragedy, joy - it's all here. Perfect for all ages - younger girls will enjoy this book as much as their grandmothers! Men would enjoy it too, but since it's about a head strong, independent woman, it is particularly well suited for women.
In addition to being a great author, Nancy Brewer is also a Civil War Re-enactor - and you can tell that she really knows her Civil War history! The Civil War era novel is filled with little details that really give you an idea of what it was like to live in that historic and tragic era of American history.
I just ordered the sequel of this book, titled Beyond Sandy Ridge . I am waiting anxiously for my new book to arrive, because I can't wait to find out what happens to Lizzie where the first book left off. And there is a third book in the series being written right now, so I have something to look forward to after I finish Beyond Sandy Ridge!
Congratulations to Patricia S! She was the lucky winner
of the Carolina Rain giveaway!
If you are like me, and can't wait to read Carolina Rain or Beyond Sandy Ridge (or both!), you can get both books on Amazon, or on the author's website. They are also available in Kindle versions! I highly recommend getting both books, because I can almost guarantee you will want to read the sequel as soon as you finish the first one!
Disclosure: I received the book that I am reviewing free of charge. However, I am posting an honest review of said product and have not been paid to endorse said products.
