Random Fun Facts about our Founding Fathers

  • The first President to live in the White house was John Adams, however he only lived there for four months. He lost the 1800 election to Thomas Jefferson.
  • George Washington gave the shortest inauguration speech in American history
  • George Washington was the only Founding Father to become President who did not have a college education.
  • Benjamin Franklin had 16 brothers and sisters. His father had 7 children by his first wife, and another 10 children with his second wife. Benjamin Franklin was the 15th child.
  • If you look closely at the famous John Trumbull painting below, you will notice that John Adams is standing on Thomas Jefferson's foot. The two men were great friends and yet political adversaries throughout their life, and often during their lives did not speak to each other.

  • Thomas Jefferson was not a member of the Constitutional Convention. He was serving as the American Minister to France at the time.
  • Jacob Shallus, who was the assistant clerk of the Pennsylvania State Assembly was the penman who engrossed (to write or print the final draft of an official document) the Constitution.
  • Thomas Jefferson's wine bill for his eight years as President was about $11,000. He spent lavishly for groceries because he liked to entertain.
  • Daniel Webster was called the "Expounder of the Constitution" because of his eloquent orations interpreting the document.
