In Flanders Fields

"In Flanders Fields" is a poem by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD. It's a beautiful poem that is perfect for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. This poem actually inspired the wearing of red poppies on Memorial Day. Moina Michale read McCrae's poem and was inspired to write her own, which you can read on this page. She also started selling red poppies for Memorial Day, in order to raise money for servicemen in need.

In Flanders Fields was originally written during World War I. It tells the story of the horrible 2nd Battle of Ypres in the Spring of 1915.

In Flanders Fields
Willy Werner

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
