Did you know that jigsaw puzzles are so popular in America that there is a society devoted to it? There is... it's called the American Jigsaw Puzzle Society. I found some fun facts about the history of jigsaw puzzles from them.

Jigsaw puzzles have been around since just before the founding of America, it seems. According to the AJPS, a man named John Spilsbury, from London, made the first jigsaw puzzle around 1760. His first puzzle was a map puzzle that was used to teach kids about geography. Puzzles were mainly used for educational purposes until the early 1800's.

Even today, puzzles can be a great educational tool, teaching kids about American history, geography, math and other subjects. United States map puzzles are perfect for teaching kids about the states - like this one... Sound Puzzle Talking USA Map or this one that features lots of state facts and information - USA Map Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle . Those are just a few of the educational puzzles you can find in our puzzle store.

You'll find some stunning puzzles from the amazing artist, Mort Kunstler featuring Civil War scenes. And Norman Rockwell puzzles are always nostalgic, and feature great scenes from later on in American history. Native American Indian puzzles are some other types that offer beautiful artwork and stunning designs. And of course, lots of patriotic puzzles can be found on this page, as well as in our American History Zazzle shop.
