Answer to "Who invented the American flag"?
by: Julie - American History Fun Facts

While many people believe that Betsy Ross designed the first American flag, some historians dispute this.

It is documented that on June 14th, 1777, the Marine Committee of the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution establishing a new flag design for the United States. This resolution reads as follows:

"Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation."

Betsy Ross' grandson, William Canby, told of a meeting between his grandmother and members of the Continental Congress. He said that his grandmother and other family members had told stories about George Washington and two other men asking her to design the first stars and stripes flag, in 1776. But the first documented meeting by the Congress about the new flag did not occur until 1777.
